Sandbox Analysis & Redesign of Valheim

The Challenge
Break down Valheim’s hybrid sandbox core loop and examine how its gameplay physics, environmental soft-gates, and resource dependencies work together with player agency and emergent behaviors to encourage players to keep playing over time.
The Psychological Secret That Controls Player Progression!
Reverse-engineered the game’s core loop and player-focused systems, including structural integrity mechanics, weather effects, and building stability constraints.
Analyzed where players encountered challenges by applying the Self-Determination Theory (SDT Framework) to understand how predictable outcomes and system interactions affect player progression.
I Completely Changed World Generation!
I created a new 'Controlled Sandbox' framework by adding hard-gates to the World Generation System. In this setup, the world consists of concentric rings of biomes, each separated by oceans.
Progression is carefully controlled. Players can only move to the next ring after overcoming dynamic hazards, like sea serpents, which disappear once the boss of the current biome is defeated.
